Jesus/Yeshua stated that the only sign of the true messiah that would be given was the sign of Jonah the prophet.
Matthew 12:38-40
Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Him,
"Teacher, we want to see a sign from You." But He answered and said to
them, "An evil and adulterous generation craves for a sign; and yet no sign
will be given to it but the sign of Jonah the prophet; for just as JONAH WAS
THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS IN THE BELLY OF THE FISH, so will the Son of Man be
three days and three nights in the heart of the earth."
Matthew 16:4
"An evil and adulterous generation seeks after
a sign; and a sign will not be given it, except the sign of Jonah." And He
left them and went away.
The story of Jonah starts with the prophet being told to go to the city of Nineveh to preach repentance to the people. Instead, Jonah attempted to evade God's will by sailing away on a boat. A great storm overtook them and the men feared for their lives. Jonah confessed that this was due to his disobedience to God's commandment to go to Nineveh.
The men asked Jonah "What shall we do?" Jonah
answered:
Jonah 1:12 Take
me up and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you, for I
know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.
Jonah 1:15 So they picked up Jonah, threw him into the sea, and the sea stopped its raging. |
|
When the men threw Jonah overboard, he was swallowed by a great fish.
Jonah 1:17
And the LORD appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the
stomach of the fish three days and three nights. |
At the end of the three days the fish vomited Jonah onto the shore.
Jonah 2:10
Then the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah up onto the dry land. |
The sign of Jonah (staying inside the belly of the fish for 3 days and 3 nights) was a prophetic sign of the Messiah. Instead of Christ being in the belly of the fish, He would be in the belly of the earth.
Jesus stated the sign before it occurred, so that when it happened we would believe that He truly was the Messiah.
Some people believe that our messiah Jesus Christ died and was buried on a Friday and was resurrected Sunday morning. Perhaps they have just wished to believe as they were told; perhaps they do not understand the Holy Bible. If this were true, then Yeshua/Jesus did not fulfill His prophecy. From Friday night to predawn Sunday does not add up 72 hours, and there is only one full night-- Saturday night. This erroneous conclusion has deceived many and is another way in which Satan attempts to discount Yeshua as our one true Messiah. Only by reading the word of God for ourselves can we see the true message God is conveying to us.
The questions are:
1. Did Christ Die on a Friday?
In the 3 links mentioned above we guide you through biblical scriptures which prove that Jesus fulfilled the sign of Jonah.
