Worse than a Hurricane

Imagine a destructive force far worse than Hurricane Katrina which struck Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi.. Imagine a force so powerful that instead of causing 100 billion dollars in damage, it would cause a staggering 100 trillion in damage. Is this possible?

There are many scenarios that make this possible, for example, a giant meteor, a super volcano, or a mega-tsunami.

We saw what a regular tsunami 30 feet high did in Indonesia in Dec 25, 2004. Whole towns were wiped out and over 250,000 people died.  This was one of the worst catastrophes ever, but what if we had a mega-tsunami with a wall of water 330 feet high that went 20 miles inland?  What if this event occurred not in the Indian Ocean, but in the Atlantic, and destroyed the coasts of both America and Europe?

We saw the amount of damage Hurricane Katrina did to the coasts of Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi in 2005. It totally greatly damaged New Orleans, but many buildings were left standing.   A mega-tsunami would have a force that can bulldoze everything in its path for up to 20 miles inland.  It would hit the coasts like a sledgehammer.

What do scientists say?

Cumbre Vieja Volcano

According to the Benfield Greig Hazard Research Centre at University College London,  The new research, a collaboration between Dr. Simon Day of the Benfield Greig Hazard Research Centre at UCL and Dr. Steven Ward of the University of California, reveals the extent and size of the mega-tsunami, the consequence of a giant landslide that may be triggered by a future eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano.

The island of La Palma in the Canary Islands

Cumbre Vieja is an active volcano in the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands (Spain).  A volcanic eruption at Cumbre Vieja could set loose a block of rock the size of the Isle of Man.  A possible landslide coming down from Cumbre Vieja with half a trillion tons of rock, would fall into the sea creating a giant mega-tsunami 100 meters in height. This giant wall of water would travel the Atlantic in eight hours hitting the east coast like a sledgehammer.

It is estimated that the damage from the Canary Islands mega-tsunami would be in the trillions of dollars. Imagine a disaster thousands of times worse than the Sumatran tsunami.  The crushing blow would hit the US, Canada, Europe, Africa, and South America. This mega-tsunami would be the worst catastrophe in recorded history.

Will an Asteroid Hit Earth?

This is what God says:

Revelation 6:12-13
I looked when He broke the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth made of hair, and the whole moon became like blood; and the stars of the sky fell to the earth, as a fig tree casts its unripe figs when shaken by a great wind.

Here the apostle John relates how the "stars of the sky"
will fall to earth.  This occurs before the rapture and it is the first of many instances in which "stars" will fall from the sky.  The event is so catastrophic that it will make the whole earth shake,
and "every mountain and island were moved out of their places"(Re 6:14).

People will recognize that these disasters are not ordinary, but the beginning of the "wrath of God" --Re 6:17 "for the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to stand?"

As we mentioned previously, the intensity of the anger of God will intensify:

Revelation 8:8-9
Then the second angel sounded; And something like a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea, and a third of the sea became blood. And one third of the living creatures which were in the sea died. One third of the ships were destroyed.

The damage will probably be caused by an asteroid, not a volcano. A volcano would have been familiar to John who probably knew about the Vesuvius eruption that destroyed Pompeii in 79AD.

In  contrast, an asteroid hitting the ocean would, due to its pressure wave, kill the fish and crush floating ships. As the pressure wave gets closer to shore, the ports and coastal cities would be demolished.

This asteroid impact would also create a tidal wave or tsunami greater than any in recorded history.  It would wash over continents.

In the April 5, 2002 issue of Science magazine it is mentioned that an asteroid called  1950 DA is scheduled to hit the Earth on March 16, 2880. This asteroid is almost one kilometer long, and since 70% of the earth's surface is water, it will probably slam into the ocean generating a giant mega-tsunami with a wall of water hundreds of feet high. This monster could destroy coastal cities and kill many millions of people.

It is not the will of God that people should perish, but these plagues come upon humanity because they disobey God. We must always try to follow God and keep His commandments.  We could only be forgiven of our sins if we repent and accept Christ as our savior, and God will spare all of those that ask Him in prayer to protect them.

Matthew 10:29-31
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And one of them shall not fall without the father. But the very hairs on your head are numbered. Fear you not therefore, you are of more than many sparrows.
